The Roux Center for the Environment was designed to advance environmental education, research, and collaboration at Bowdoin College. Located at the heart of campus, the facility provides students and faculty with modern spaces that support interdisciplinary learning and foster a deeper understanding of environmental challenges and solutions.

The project included thoughtfully designed classrooms, meeting areas, offices, and collaborative spaces that encourage engagement between students, researchers, and the broader campus community. Sustainable building practices and energy-efficient systems were incorporated throughout the project, reflecting Bowdoin College’s commitment to environmental stewardship and responsible campus development. At 29,000 sf with 15 laboratories this LEED Platinum building is constructed out of sustainable building materials. It has a solar array on one section of the roof and a green roof with gardens on the other. Its beautifully unique siding and complex building envelope combine to make this a very energy efficient building. The central communal space features a glass auditorium of multi-story “lantern” with bench seating, used as a function, learning or study area.

Today, the Roux Center serves as a dynamic hub for environmental studies, providing flexible learning environments that support innovation, research, and community engagement while enhancing the college’s academic mission.
